Although "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" did not make the short list for the documentary Oscar, it has been named best music doc by the International Documentary Assn.
The IDA on Monday announced winners in seven categories in advance of the organization's awards ceremony set for Friday at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles.
"Anvil!," the tale of a heavy metal band in the 1980s directed by Sacha Gervasi and produced by Rebecca Yeldham, also is nominated for the IDA's top feature prize, which will be announced Friday.
PBS' "POV" series, produced by American Documentary, captured the group's Continuing Series Award. In the Limited Series category, the prize went to the Sundance Channel's "Architecture School," a six-part series from Michael Selditch and Stan Bertheaud that follows a group of students at Tulane's School of Architecture.
The IDA/Humanitas Award, a new prize that recognizes a film that strives to unify the human family, goes to Mai Iskander's "Garbage Dreams," which centers on three teenage boys growing up on the outskirts of Cairo.
The IDA/Pare Lorentz Award goes to Irene Taylor Brodsky's Oscar-nominated short "The Final Inch," about health workers in some of India's poorest neighborhoods. The IDA/ABC News VideoSource Award, for best use of archival news footage, was awarded to "Wounded Knee," an episode produced and directed by Stanley Nelson from the "We Shall Remain" series produced by WGBH with Native American Public Television.
Stanford's Peter Jordan earned the David L. Wolper Student Documentary Achievement Award for his short "The First Kid to Learn English From Mexico."
