Nominados y prenominados a los BAFTA
The nominations for the Film Not in the English Language Award, to be presented at the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2010, were announced today.
LONDON -- Filmmaking heavyweights Michael Mann and Rob Marshall are conspicuous by their absence on this year's Orange British Academy Film Awards long list.
Presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the long list marks the end of the initial voting process and provides 15 names in each of the major categories including best film and best director from which the eventual winner will emerge.
Historically it is the names missing from the list that set industry chins wagging on release ahead of next month's ceremony.
Mann and his movie "Public Enemies" and Rob Marshall's musical film "Nine" both miss out on slots in either the director or best film category. And it isn't just the directors who will not be creating a space on their shelves for an Orange British Academy Film Award. Nom regulars and award ceremony doyens Johnny Depp and Daniel Day-Lewis are also nowhere to be found in the talent categories for their roles in "Enemies" and "Nine," respectively.
As one industry insider said, when it comes to the BAFTA voting membership, Day-Lewis generally only needs "to break wind to get a nomination."
Other notable absentees from the best film and director lists include Ken Loach and his "Looking for Eric" with Eric Cantona; Kevin Macdonald and his outing "State of Play"; "Creation" by Jon Amiel and Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones."
At least Jackson's outing as producer, "District 9," makes it onto the list to make up for the absence of "Bones."
One BAFTA voting member told The Hollywood Reporter that the names on the long list owe much to the screener copies sent out to voters. Movies like "Nine" simply did not get in front of voter eyes.
But the long list does include a slew of high profile nomination slots for James Cameron's "Avatar," Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" and "Inglourious Basterds."
And the acting long list includes awards experience in spades with Meryl Streep appearing twice on the best leading actress list for her roles in "It's Complicated" and "Julie and Julia" while Helen Mirren is there for "The Last Station." And rising star Carey Mulligan is a hot favorite for her turn in "An Education."
Round 2 of voting kicks off online Thursday to shrink the 15 down to five nominations in each category.
The five nominations for best foreign-language movie have already been decided and unveiled Thursday. The winner will come from "Broken Embraces," "Coco Before Chanel," "Let the Right One In," "A Prophet" and "The White Ribbon."
The awards will take place Feb. 21 at London's Royal Opera House.
The Film Not in the English Language nominees are announced today ahead of the announcement of the nominations in other categories, which will take place later this month.

SAG nominations announced (Variety)
"An Education," "The Hurt Locker," "Inglourious Basterds," "Nine" and "Precious" took the SAG nominations for best ensemble cast.
Michelle Monaghan and Chris O'Donnell announced the nominations Thursday morning at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.
Nominees for best actor were Jeff Bridges for "Crazy Heart," George Clooney for "Up in the Air," Colin Firth for "Single Man," Morgan Freeman for "Invictus" and Jeremy Renner for "The Hurt Locker."
Actress noms went to Sandra Bullock for "The Blind Side," Helen Mirren for "The Last Station," Carey Mulligan for "An Education," Gabourey Sidibe for "Precious" and Meryl Streep for "Julie and Julia."
Supporting actor nods went to Matt Damon for "Invictus," Woody Harrelson for "The Messenger," Christopher Plummer for "The Last Station," Stanley Tucci for "The Lovely Bones" and Christop Waltz for "Inglourious Basterds."
Supporting actress noms included Penelope Cruz for "Nine," Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick for "Up in the Air," Diane Kruger for "Inglourious Basterds" and Mo'Nique for "Precious."
Winners will be announced Jan. 23 in ceremonies at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
Ballots will be sent to the 120,000 members of the Screen Actors Guild.
The SAG award for best ensemble cast has matched the Oscar winner for Best Picture in seven of the last 14 years, including this year's double winner "Slumdog Millionaire."
SAG's best actor winner has matched the Oscar winner in 11 of the last 15 years, including Sean Penn for "Milk" this year.
SAG's best actress winner has matched the Oscar in 10 of 15 years. Streep won the SAG trophy this year for "Doubt" and Kate Winslet won the Oscar for "The Reader" after winning the SAG prize in the supporting category.

Toronto Film Festival 2009 Preview 1: "An Education", de Lone Scherfig
El miércoles estoy partiendo para Toronto a cubrir el festival de cine y a "servir" como jurado de Fipresci. En principio, no suena nada mal, aunque hay una sola cosa que me preocupa. La sección de la que me toca ser jurado tiene... ¡58 películas! Y no hay forma de cubrirlas todas. Así que aquí estamos, negociando para bajar esa cantidad a una cifra accesible.
Este es un año raro para mí ya que llegué a esta altura sin haber ido a ningún festival además de nuestro BAFICI. En otros años siempre había algún evento previo en el que podía "descargar" alguna de las peliculas --Cannes, Berlín, Ficco, Miami, Rotterdam, el propio BAFICI y hasta Mar del Plata cuando era en marzo--, pero este año estoy, como dicen por aquí, "en bolas".
De cualquier manera, gracias a algunos screeners cedidos gentilmente, a algunas películas que se estrenaron, otras que me proyectaron, más otras que se bajaron y otras que circulan gracias a gente amiga, he podido ver unas pocas películas de esta edición del festival, que abarca más de 300. Encima eso: nada de Venecia o Cannes, cuyos programas son relativamente acotados. Acá tenés de todo, paralelamente... y a cruzar los dedos.
Así que empiezo mi PREVIEW de Toronto recomendando --no fervorosamente, pero sí cálidamente--, la película "An Education", de Lone Scherfig. Nunca me interesó demasiado "Italiano para principiantes" y, en general, los cineastas daneses del post-Dogma no han hecho cosas demasiado interesantes, y ese paquete incluye al propio Lars Von Trier (otro que integrará esta serie de "previews"), a Thomas Vinterberg y a Susanne Bier, entre otros.
Sin embargo, "An Education" está muy lejos de esa suerte de melodrama sucio que impera en el post-Dogma. Será porque transcurre en la Inglaterra de principios de los '60 y esa mezcla de brusquedad y desesperación que siempre hay en los filmes de los "daneses en el exilio" está fuera de lugar aquí. Se trata de un filme austero, un drama amable acerca de una chica de 16 años (Carey Mulligan), una muy buena estudiante que quiere entrar a Oxford y que se ve fascinada por un hombre bastante mayor (Peter Sarsgaard) que "le muestra el mundo" y la hace olvidarse de sus estudios e ignorar a sus bastante retrógrados padres. "La universidad de la calle" frente a "los altos estudios".
Como supongo que la película se estrenará comercialmente, allí me explayaré más sobre el filme, que tiene guión del escritor Nick Hornby y se basa en una "memoir" escrita por Lynn Barber. Aquí diré que, pese a ciertos valores tradicionales (¡Chicos, no abandonen sus estudios!) que el filme termina expresando, nunca se siente como una película reaccionaria. Tampoco lleva el potencial drama hacia zonas o situaciones excesivamente desagradables. Como es previsible, habrá cierta intriga por saber de qué va realmente el personaje de Sarsgaard y uno sabe que esa "luna de miel" acabará de mala manera. Pero cinematográficamente la resolución es apropiada, discreta, bastante inteligente. Tal vez, demasiado discreta, pero --sin dudas-- proverbialmente británica.
Seguramente "An Education" figurará como posible candidata a algún premio a la hora de los Oscars y los BAFTA. Es un filme demasiado "pequeño" como para ganar grandes premios, pero Sarsgaard y Mulligan están muy bien y podrían recibir alguna nominación. En la Argentina, la película la estrenará Sony Pictures. Bah, tal vez...
