Rotterdam & Berlinale Press Talent Campus

39th International Film Festival Rotterdam
January 27 – February 7, 2010

IFFR Trainee Project for Young Film Critics

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
The International Film Festival Rotterdam welcomes applications for the 12th edition of its IFFR Trainee Project for Young Film Critics taking place during the 39th festival edition (
January 27 – February 7, 2010)

Deadline for applications: Friday November 6, 2009.
Information / applications: IFFR Press Office, press@filmfestivalrotterdam

INTRODUCTION
The International Film Festival Rotterdam supports film making, film producing and journalistic talent on several levels: the main festival section 'Bright Future' (including competitions for feature length and short films) presents recent works by first and second time filmmakers; Rotterdam's Hubert Bals Fund contributes to film projects in developing countries and CineMart organizes a trainee project for young film producers (Rotterdam Lab) in close collaboration with its partner organizations. Recognizing the important role of film criticism to the perception of independent cinema, the Rotterdam film festival organizes a trainee project for young film critics.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The IFFR Trainee Project for Young Film Critics is a talent development program that offers up to six young (under 30 years), motivated and talented professional film critics from outside The Netherlands a chance to travel abroad for covering a major international film festival, to get acquainted with the Rotterdam film festival in particular and the broad range of independent cinema it offers.

The project was created in 1998 motivated by the fact that young and upcoming film critics get less opportunities to explore and sharpen their knowledge and views on independent and experimental cinema - and the festivals, like the International Film Festival Rotterdam, that present it.

TRAINEE PROGRAM
The program of the Trainee Project consists a.o. of taking part in the Rotterdam FIPRESCI Jury meetings; exploring an assigned part of the festival; publishing about the festival on the IFFR website and in the festival's newspaper Daily Tiger; expert meetings; reporting about the festival for own affiliation(s). Trainees are offered a IFFR press badge, budget hotel accommodation during the festival period; part of travel expenses.

The past editions the Rotterdam film festival welcomed trainee film critics from:
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, France, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Turkey, UK and USA.

WHAT TO EXPECT
• IFFR 2010 press accreditation
• budget hotel accommodation from January 28 - February 6, 2010

• (part of) travel costs according to country of origin.
• The IFFR wants its trainee film critics to really participate in the festival. Each trainee will take part in a programme of meetings and will be assigned tasks ranging from attending the FIPRESCI Jury-meetings, covering a festival sidebar and contributing to the IFFR Daily Tiger. Each trainee will also be asked to report on their assignments and experiences in articles, interviews or essays on the IFFR website. There will be time to explore all aspects of the festival - films, art exhibitions, panel discussions, Q&A sessions and debates.
• In addition, the trainees should work on articles to be published in their home country. The trainees will form a team, supported by the IFFR Press Office and Daily Tiger Editorial Staff.

CRITERIA FOR APPLICATION

· Age under 30 years
· Fluent command of the English language (written and spoken)

Berlinale Talent Campus #8, February 13 – 18, 2010

From February 13-18, 2010, the Berlinale Talent Campus will open its doors at the Theater Hebbel am Ufer and welcome 350 young filmmakers from all over the world during the Berlin International Film Festival.

The eighth Berlinale Talent Campus will address the theme "Cinema Needs Talent: Looking for the Right People". For many filmmakers, teaming up with the right people to inspire and support them and to create a collective vision is the essential element of successful filmmaking.

The upcoming Berlinale Talent Campus will tap into these thoughts and ask how the development of personal craftsmanship and the experience of choosing the right people intertwine to build gainful long-term creative collaborations.

"Teamwork is the key to success. It's about daring to ask the vital questions together in order to exceed your own limits and to keep that one essential goal in sight: to make a great film. This theme also reflects the Campus, which has, since the beginning, strived to connect young international filmmakers with their colleagues and established professionals, always in the spirit of encouraging collaborative filmmaking”, says Programme Manager Matthijs Wouter Knol.

The application deadline for the Berlinale Talent Campus #8 is October 7, 2009. Producers, directors, actors, cinematographers, screenwriters, editors, production designers, film composers, sound designers, film journalists and visual artists from all over the world are invited to apply online through the Campus website, www.berlinale-talentcampus.de.

4° Talent Campus - Buenos Aires

Berlin Today Award 2010: Short Films for the Big Screen

“Straight to Cinema” is the theme for the short film competition of the Berlinale Talent Campus in 2010

Call for entries - Berlin Today Award 2010

The short film competition of the Berlinale Talent Campus – supported since 2003 by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg – invites directors from all over the world to submit short film ideas inspired by the theme “Straight to Cinema”. In a digital age where film culture is undergoing fundamental changes, the cinema remains a unique public space, a centre for collective experiences and sensations. The Berlin Today Award theme for 2010 encourages young filmmakers to seek inspiration in the cinema and all its possibilities, and develop a short film for the big screen. The top five film ideas will be realised by five production companies from Berlin and Brandenburg – with support from Medienboard and the film industry.

Berlinale Talent Campus current applicants and former participants, as well as producers from the Berlin-Brandenburg region, can apply until November 25, 2008, to realise a short film project. Talents and producers can go to www.berlintoday.de to access the online application and participation conditions.

15 pre-selected Talents will have an opportunity to present their film ideas and convince producers attending the “Producers’ Meeting” held during the Berlinale Talent Campus 2009 (February 7-12, 2009). Five projects will be selected and have until the end of 2009 to make the final leap toward realisation. The short films will celebrate their world premiere during the opening of the Berlinale Talent Campus 2010. The winner, selected by a jury, will receive the Berlin Today Award 2010.
