Premios Sur de la Academia del Cine Argentino

Esta es la típica nota, durante años publicada en Clarín, últimamente también acá, en la que me fastidio y me enojo por estas nominaciones. Ya me da pereza hasta hacerlo, sinceramente, pero hay algunos detalles que no puedo dejar pasar. Más allá del merecido reconocimiento a "Carancho" --para mí, la película argentina del año, entre las llamadas "grandes"--, hay muchas ausencias notables y una exagerada representación de filmes menores.

Para empezar, "Por tu culpa", "El último verano de la Boyita" y Rompecabezas" apenas figuran, y tienen menos nominaciones que, por ejemplo, "Cuestión de principios", "El mural" o "Igualita a mí". Me evito los comentarios, aunque no hay duda que esas tres (especialmente la de Berneri) están entre las mejores del año... y fueron dirigidas por mujeres. Con "Francia", pasa más o menos lo mismo.

"La Tigra, Chaco" y "Excursiones", dos de las mejores películas del año a mi entender, no tienen ninguna nominación, aunque esto no debería ni sorprenderme porque son películas que los votantes, evidentemente, ni se tomaron el trabajo de ver.

Sin duda muchas de las nominaciones son merecidas, pero admitamos que los miembros de la Academia, en el mejor de los casos, habrán visto 10-15 estrenos argentinos del año, con lo cual su capacidad para juzgar los estrenos es más que discutible.

Esto, igualmente, seguirá siendo así siempre y no parece haber forma de cambiarlo. Tampoco las productoras, en muchos casos, se toman el trabajo de enviarles screeners a los votantes, como para tapar ese inevitable bache (hay casi cien estrenos nacionales por año y creo que somos muy pocos los que vemos más del 70-80% de la producción y muchas veces por obligación y no por placer).

Así que no espero que cambien mucho las cosas. Hace unos años instalamos el Premio Fipresci a la mejor película argentina del año. Pequeño acto de reparación, si se quiere, para todas esas películas que los Premios Sur y Cóndor pasan por alto. Será un premio consuelo, seguro, pero sé por experiencia que algunos cineastas lo valoran mucho más de lo que nosotros mismos creemos.

Esto, igual, no viene a cuento de competir quien da mejores premios, quien sabe más de cine ni nada por el estilo. Sólo dar un dato de la realidad: nosotros vemos las películas.

Oscars 2010: Preparen las armas (Clarín)

La superabundancia de información, premios previos (de críticos, sindicatos, Globos de Oro), comentaristas, bloggers y analistas, va dejando cada vez con menos sorpresas a las nominaciones a los Oscar de la Academia. Sólo basta revisar un poco lo "hablado" previamente para notar que, salvo un par de sorpresas, las nominaciones son un reflejo casi exacto de lo que se rumoreaba en Internet, prueba también de la influencia que siguen ejerciendo los medios en la contienda.

Sí, la batalla clave estará dada entre Avatar y Vivir al límite. Dos películas, si se quiere, bélicas, pero muy diferentes entre sí: la primera es una superproducción de presupuesto y recaudación millonarias (costó 500 millones, recaudará más de 2.500). La segunda es una película muy chica (costó 12 millones de dólares) que recaudó sólo un poco más en su momento y se estrena mañana en la Argentina.

Esa batalla tiene un condimento extra: ambos filmes tienen nueve nominaciones cada uno pero, además, sus directores, James Cameron y Kathryn Bigelow, fueron marido y mujer, lo que le agrega un toque personal a la contienda. De cualquier manera, ambos mantienen una muy buena relación.

Si la pelea está entonces entre Avatar y Vivir al límite, el tercero en discordia, con ocho nominaciones, es Bastardos sin gloria, de Quentin Tarantino, nominada también como película, director, actor de reparto (Christoph Waltz, casi seguro triunfador) y guión, entre otros rubros.

Da la impresión de que las otras siete nominadas a mejor película (este año, después de seis décadas, se volvió a este sistema) están sólo para acompañarlas. Amor sin escalas, de Jason Reitman (seis nominaciones), podría tener una mínima posibilidad de colarse. O Preciosa (también con seis nominaciones; se estrena aquí el 11), que también cosechó una nominación a mejor director para Lee Daniels, actriz y actriz de reparto.

Pero las demás: Up, Enseñanza de vida, Sector nueve, Un hombre serio y la sorpresa, The Blind Side/Un sueño posible (que dejó afuera a Invictus, la gran marginada de esa contienda), irán sólo a aplaudir a las ganadoras.

Ninguna sorpresa en los rubros actorales. Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart/Loco corazón) sigue siendo el favorito en el rubro mejor actor. George Clooney (Amor sin escalas) corre segundo y Colin Firth (A Single Man/Sólo un hombre), tercero. Morgan Freeman (Invictus) y Jeremy Renner (Vivir al límite) completan.

En la categoría femenina viene arrasando en los premios previos Sandra Bullock (Un sueño posible), pero en los Oscars puede resultarle algo más difícil ganar: Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia) y Carey Mulligan (Enseñanza de vida) le hacen sombra, lo mismo que Gabourey Sibide (Preciosa). Completa Helen Mirren (La última estación).

Christoph Waltz (Bastardos sin gloria) y Mo'Nique (Preciosa) son casi seguros ganadores en las categorías de reparto. Allí también están nombres más famosos pero que dificilmente triunfen, como Woody Harrelson (The Messenger) y Matt Damon (Invictus), entre los hombres; y Penélope Cruz (Nine), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Loco corazón) y las dos chicas de Amor sin escalas (Anna Kendrick y Vera Farmiga).

Avatar no figura en la categoría Guión Original, lo que le baja unas fichas. Allí sí están Vivir al límite y Bastardos sin gloria. En el rubro Guión Adaptado, Jason Reitman y Sheldon Turner son favoritos por Amor sin escalas, con Enseñanza de vida (del escritor inglés Nick Hornby) y Preciosa, de Geoffrey Fletcher, como principales rivales.

La película animada Up, una aventura de altura, sorprendió al ser nominada en cinco rubros, ninguno de los cuales es por una canción: son mejor película, película de animación (gran candidata), banda de sonido, montaje y guión. En la categoría animada tiene como principales rivales a otras dos joyitas del género: El fantástico Sr. Fox, de Wes Anderson, y Coraline, de Henry Selick.

The Cove aparece como la principal candidata a llevarse el premio a mejor documental, con Food Inc. como máximo rival. Y si bien será difícil vencer a Avatar en las categorías técnicas, hoy da la impresión que la máxima favorita es Vivir al límite, peleas matrimoniales, al margen.«

Oscar oddities and observations (Variety)

The list of nominees for the 82nd annual Academy Awards includes some notable rarities:

• Perhaps signaling the increased globalization of showbiz, only four of the 10 films nominated for best picture are set primarily in the U.S. ("The Blind Side," "Precious," "A Serious Man," "Up in the Air"). Other locales include South Africa, Europe, South America, the Mideast and Pandora. Also reflecting, perhaps, a global frame of mind, many of the nominated films have subtitled sequences, some brief, some lengthy: "Avatar," "District 9," "Inglourious Basterds," "Precious." (Last year's winner, "Slumdog Millionaire," was two-thirds subtitled).

• The 24 Oscar categories again offered proof that festivals play a key role in awards strategies. Eight of the 10 top contenders debuted at fests: "The Hurt Locker" (Venice/Toronto 2008), "Precious" and "An Education" (Sundance); "Up," "Inglourious" (Cannes); "Up in the Air" (Telluride/Toronto), "A Serious Man" (Toronto) and "Avatar" (Dubai). Contenders in other categories include "A Single Man" (Venice), "The Messenger" (Sundance/Berlin), "The Last Station" (Telluride), "The White Ribbon" and "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" (Cannes), "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (London) and "The Young Victoria" (Toronto).

• Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious") joins a select group of 68 previous actors who have been nominated for their first performance. That's out of a total of more than 1,400 nominated perfs over the years.

• Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker") is the fourth woman ever nommed as director, while Lee Daniels ("Precious") is only the second black. Previous helming nominees include Lena Wertmuller ("Seven Beauties"), Jane Campion ("The Piano"), Sofia Coppola ("Lost in Translation") and John Singleton ("Boyz n the Hood").

• "Up" is the second toon ever nominated for best pic, after Disney's 1991 "Beauty and the Beast." It's the first CGI toon in the top category, and the first in that race since the Academy launched the feature-toon category in 2001.

• This is the first year that 3D films were taken seriously by Academy voters, with "Up," "Coraline" and "Avatar" in contention.

• Despite a flurry of Iraq War-themed movies in past years, "Hurt Locker" is the first to get a best-pic bid.

• Meryl Streep keeps breaking her own record, with her 16th nomination. Acting runners-up are Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson, with 12 each. And Streep's 13th bid as lead actress means she's now the champ in that category, after being tied with Hepburn (who'd never received a supporting bid).

• Jason Reitman scored triple noms as a producer, writer and the helmer of "Up in the Air." Double contenders include Lee Daniels (producer and director of "Precious"), James Cameron ("Avatar" producer and director), Joel & Ethan Coen ("Serious" producers and writers), Quentin Tarantino ("Basterds" writer and helmer), Pete Docter (a writer of "Up," also nommed for animated feature), Randy Newman (two songs from "The Princess and the Frog"), and Christopher Boyes ("Avatar") and Paul N.J. Ottosson ("Hurt Locker"), in both sound editing and sound mixing.

• Of the 10 best pic contenders, six were released in the fourth quarter. "Up" launched in May, "Hurt Locker" in June, "District" and "Inglourious" in August.

Oscars 2010: Algunas observaciones sobre nominaciones y ausencias

Yo venía bien, aceptando unas nominaciones que me parecían dignas (odio "Precious", pero era inevitable). Pero la candidatura de "The Blind Side" me sublevó. La película es una cagada, hecha y derecha, una épica deportiva tan banal y básica que ya en los '80 nos hubiera parecido vieja.

En lugar de esa podían haber entrado THE ROAD, THE MESSENGER, STAR TREK, THE HANGOVER, FANTASTIC MR. FOX, INVICTUS y varias más...

Otras pelis que merecían algún hueso son 500 DAYS OF SUMMER, WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (¿ni una canción?), algunas de las chicas de INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (Melanie Laurent, especialmente, o Diane Kruger), Ben Foster por THE MESSENGER, Viggo Mortensen por THE ROAD (ambos están mejor que Freeman imitando a Mandela). Pero que haya entrado Jeremy Renner (THE HURT LOCKER) es una buena elección.

Lee Daniels (PRECIOUS), por Dios! Nadie pensó en Michael Haneke, Pedro Almodovar, Clint Eastwood, Wes Anderson, Spike Jonze??? Quién se acordará de Daniels en cinco años?

Sigo sin entender porqué siguen nominando a Penélope Cruz (si hubiera sido por la peli de Almodóvar en lugar de NINE, todavía) o ese voto de memoria a Helen Mirren (THE LAST STATION). Abbie Cornish en BRIGHT STAR podía haber sido un poco más original, ¿no?

Las pelis extranjeras fueron dentro de lo pensado. Habiendo visto SAMSON & DELILAH, pensé que iba a entrar en lugar de THE MILK OF SORROW, pero no fue asi para alegría de los amigos peruanos...

Acá van mis pálpitos en once categorías. En muchas de ellas me jugué con alguna sorpresita o cambio a lo que todos esperan. En otras, no por ganar el jueguito sino porque me parecen ajustadas, mis predicciones son similares a la de gran parte de los "opinólogos" en la materia. La jugada más arriesgada que hice es la de Almodóvar, y seguramente me irá mal, pero hay que hacer alguna que otra apuesta rara en esto.

LONDON -- James Cameron's " Avatar," Kathryn Bigelow's " The Hurt Locker" and Lone Scherfig's " An Education" emerged blinking with eight nominations apiece for this year's Orange British Film Awards including noms for best film and best director.

The big surprise on this year's list is the Peter Jackson produced South African set sci-fi " District 9" which secured seven nominations, one ahead of this year's six times nominees " Inglourious Basterds" and " Up in the Air."To win this year's best film award, recent Golden Globe king Cameron and his other worldly blue people drama will have to see off competition from " Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire" and "Up In The Air" as well as "The Hurt Locker" and "An Education."

Presented by the British Academy Of Film and Television Arts, the Orange BAFA for best director is a face-off for votes with "District 9" director Neill Blomkamp joining a list sporting Quentin Tarantino for his World War II actioner "Inglourious Basterds," Cameron, Scherfig and Bigelow.

Other Globe winners making the list include Jeff Bridges for his turn in " Crazy Heart" in the leading actor category where he finds himself up against George Clooney for "Up In The Air," Colin Firth for " A Single Man," Jeremy Renner in "The Hurt Locker" and Andy Serkis for " Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll."The evening's leading actress nod will come from Carey Mulligan in "An Education," Saoirse Ronan in " The Lovely Bones," Gabourey Sidibe for "Precious," Meryl Streep in " Julie & Julia" and Audrey Tautou for " Coco Before Chanel."

Alfred Molina is in the running for best supporting actor for his turn in "An Education" alongside Alec Baldwin for " It's Complicated," Christian McKay for " Me And Orson Welles," Stanley Tucci's turn in "The Lovely Bones" and Christoph Waltz in "Inglourious Basterds."Meanwhile "Up In The Air" duo Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick and " Nowhere Boy" pair Anne-Marie Duff and Kristin Scott Thomas are nominated alongside Mo'nique" for "Precious" in the best supporting actress category.

Nominaciones a los Spirit Awards (Indiewire)

The nominations for the 25th Anniversary Spirit Awards are being announced now in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be held on Friday evening March 5 at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles.

Film Independent executive director Dawn Hudson welcomed attendees to the nominations this morning, touting the legacy of the awards and the early nominees, including Spike Lee, the Coen Brothers, Jim Jarmusch and others.

“We are living in the world that they created,” she said this mornining, “This years nominations reflect the same criteria that were important to us back then. [They are] doing more with less.”

The ceremony will air live and uncut on Friday, March 5, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. PST/11:00 p.m. EST on IFC.

15 docs on Oscar shortlist (Variety)

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced the 15 docus shortlisted for the documentary feature Oscar. The Academy said 89 films had originally qualified for the selection.

Several titles that have already had successful theatrical runs were on the list, including "The Cove," directed by Louie Psihoyos; "Food, Inc.," directed by Robert Kenner; "Valentino: The Last Emperor," directed by Matt Tyrnauer; and "Every Little Step," directed by James D. Stern and Adam Del Deo.

The year's highest-grossing docu, Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story," which opened Sept. 23, in time for the Academy's Sept. 30 cutoff date, did not make the list. Other high-profile docs absent from the list include "The September Issue," "Tyson," "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," "It Might Get Loud" and "We Live in Public."

Remaining titles on the shortlist are "The Beaches of Agnes," "Burma VJ," "Facing Ali," "Garbage Dreams," "Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders," "The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers," "Mugabe and the White African," "Sergio," "Soundtrack for a Revolution," "Under Our Skin" and "Which Way Home."

Docu branch members will select five nominees from among the 15 titles on the shortlist.

Nominations for the Oscars will be announced Feb. 2; Academy Awards will be presented March 7.

Termitas, elefantes blancos y los Oscar

En el año de la muerte de Manny Farber --ok, estamos en 2009 pero los Oscars se entregan a la producción del año pasado--, la Academia de Hollywood parece demostrar que jamás leyó una palabra de lo escrito por este crítico, lo cual no es extraño. Lo que sí es extraño es que, después de varios años en los que parecían estar tratando de corregir la clásica rutina de nominar y premiar en los Oscar esas películas "de calidad", "prestigiosas", tan caras a sellos como Miramax en los años '90 (adaptaciones literarias, temáticas supuestamente importantes), hayan vuelto a las andadas... descaradamente.

Digámoslo simplemente: más allá de algunas excepciones, las nominaciones al Oscar 2008 son una vergüenza, un papelón. En un año que no había sido necesariamente malo, la Academia lo cierra con una serie de nominaciones que recuerdan a los Oscar de los años 50, cuando se premiaban los "Ben Hur" y "La historia más grande jamás contada", o como se llame ese inmemorable bodrio.

No voy a recorrer todo lo que está mal en las nominaciones, aunque sólo con ver la lista es más que evidente. Volviendo a una habitual lectura reduccionista de Farber, podemos decir que el elección de los miembros de la Academia responde a la idea más básica del "White Elephant Art": arte de obra maestra, enamorado de su propia seriedad y belleza. Si bien Farber iba mucho más allá de la lectura actual que se hace hoy de él (en la bolsa de "elefantes blancos" caían Antonioni, Welles, Truffaut, etc.), el término Elefante Blanco ha quedado pegado al tipo de películas que aquí habitualmente catalogamos como "qualité".

No vi "The Reader", pero todo lo que hay detrás de ella --novela, director, guionista, productor-- me la hace suponer un clásico caso de Elefante Blanco. A su manera, "Slumdog Millionaire" también lo es. Y, pese a ser tres películas "pasables" --pero no más que eso--, lo mismo sucede con "Frost/Nixon", "Milk" y "Benjamin Button".

Lo curioso es que esas cinco nominaciones se hacen marginando, por lo menos, a tres películas que no responden a esos códigos, que no fueron hechas para ganar premios y que, más allá de que todas terminan siendo algo más creídas de su propia seriedad de lo que aparentan, funcionan en otro registro: "El caballero de la noche", "Wall-E" y "Gran Torino". También podría mencionar a otra película que me gusta mucho como "The Wrestler", de Darren Aronofsky, pero no estoy del todo seguro si representa al universo (muy cambiante) del director o si es más calculada de lo que parece.

La ausencia de las tres (o las cuatro) resume todo lo que está mal con la Academia: ignorar una película de superhéroes (en realidad, no hay ningún superhéroe en "Batman", pero entienden lo que quiero decir), una de animación y un drama popular, hecho con la simpleza y efectividad que muchos le venían pidiendo a Eastwood hace años. De las primeras dos ya hablé bastante, respecto a "Gran Torino" diré que más allá de que es una gran película, estimo que la marginación de la Academia hará crecer su status hasta transformarla en uno de los grandes clásicos de Clint. A mí, por lo menos, me hizo gruñir exasperado como a su personaje, Walt Kowalski, poner cara de estar oliendo mierda en todas partes (ver foto) y hasta hacer el gestito de disparar con los dedos, un nuevo clásico de Clint.

Pese a mi interés por el cine de Fincher y Van Sant, siento que en estas películas se han traicionado estéticamente. "Benjamin Button" y "Milk" tienen sus momentos, no son el completo desperdicio de tiempo y la trampa emocional abyecta que es "Slumdog Millionaire", pero responden a un criterio de cine despersonalizado, desprovisto de subjetividad. Casi no hay "Van Sant moments" en "Milk" (lo más parecido que Gus hizo a "Milk" debe haber sido "Good Will Hunting"), al menos no del Gus Van Sant que más me interesa. Y poco queda del Fincher de "Zodiac" en "Benjamin Button", más allá de la duración... De cualquier manera, por lo alternativamente fallida y lograda, me quedó con la irregular película de Fincher.

Hace dos años, Martin Scorsese ganó con una película que no había hecho para ganar premios y que servía para salvarnos del oprobio de "Babel". El año pasado, nos gusten más o menos, "No Country For Old Men" y "There Will Be Blood" eran películas que --si bien podrían entrar en la catalogación "elefante blanco", especialmente la segunda-- tenían personalidad propia, demostraban la presencia de creadores detrás de las cámaras. Y también estaba la impecable "Juno" (de hecho, el año pasado me interesaron bastante las cinco!).

Este año siento que no hay nada de eso. Ni siquiera "Frost/Nixon" --la película que, en mi opinión, "mejor funciona" dramáticamente de las cuatro nominadas que vi-- representa ninguna visión singular ni nos abre las puertas a un mundo personal. Ron Howard ha hecho algunas buenas películas, sí, pero también es el que viene de hacer la intragable "Código Da Vinci" y el que este año estrena "Angeles y demonios", otro best seller del mismo autor. Confieso que hasta "Revolutionary Road" --que tiene todos los vicios que critico aquí-- me interesó más que cualquiera de las cinco nominadas. Calculo que será por esos rasgos distintivos --su sequedad y su crudeza que bordean, lamentablemente, la frialdad y la crueldad-- que se quedó afuera.

No es que tampoco uno espere un criterio sólido y cinéfilo de parte de la Academia. Siempre se nominaron temas, actores, películas que reflejen cierto contexto político, etc. El cine allí suele ser lo de menos. Pero parecía que en las últimas décadas --digamos, desde el triunfo de "The Silence of the Lambs"-- siempre había uno o dos títulos personales que se colaban en el "quinteto de la muerte". Este año no hay nada. Un zoológico lleno de elefantes blancos, sin termitas ni mosquitos ni ovejas negras ni nada.
