"Where the Wild Things Are" - Original Soundtrack - crítica (Clarín)

A mediados de los '70, un maestro de primaria canadiense tuvo la idea de armar una banda de rock con sus alumnos. Pero en lugar se seguir los métodos y canciones tradicionales, puso a los chicos a cantar temas de David Bowie, Beach Boys y Wings, entre otros.

De allí salió el album (de culto) The Langley School Music Project y no es extraño escuchar que Spike Jonze, el director de la adaptación al cine del cuento para niños Where the Wild Things Are, de Maurice Sendak (que aquí se estrenará en marzo con el título local de Donde viven los monstruos) y la lider de Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O, se inspiraron en ese modelo a la hora de crear la banda sonora del filme.

Karen y un extraordinario grupo de colaboradores (miembros de bandas como Deerhunter, Raconteurs, Queens of the Stone Age y de su propio grupo) se unieron así a un coro de unos quince niños sin experiencia musical, con los que ofrecen una decena de canciones que pasan de la ternura melancólica de Worried Shoes (excelente cover de Daniel Johnston) y la hermosa Hideaway, a la algarabía festivo/destructiva de Capsize, Rumpus o Heads Up.

All Is Love es, sin duda, el tema central del filme, casi logrando capturar todos los estados emocionales de la película en una sola canción: de la dulzura a la tristeza, de la melancolía a la contagiosa excitación.

Y si bien es cierto que la experiencia de este álbum recién se completa viendo el filme, no queda duda de que se trata de un bellísimo disco en sí mismo. Karen y Spike suman a las canciones breves interludios instrumentales y algunos diálogos, y así terminan captando la esencia de esta historia de un chico que se escapa de su casa y va a parar a una isla (¿imaginaria?) en la que vive un curioso grupo de criaturas de apariencia extrañísima -y de costumbres, a la vez, juguetonas y violentas-, pero absolutamente tiernos y queribles. Como los niños...«

Sinopsis: Leo, un joven en pleno proceso de autoaceptación y definición sexual, se reencuentra con Caro, una ex compañera de Escuela Primaria que le gustaba cuando eran chicos y que ahora vive su propia crisis personal. Ese reencuentro casual va a repercutir en los conflictos de cada uno sin que ninguno de los dos sepa lo que realmente le pasa al otro.

You would be hard-pressed to find another film as anticipated this fall as Where The Wild Things Are. Directed by Spike Jonze and with a screenplay written by Dave Eggers, this film became a triple threat the day it was announced that Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs wrote the soundtrack, along with her YYY's bandmates, Brian Chase and Nick Zinner, and a few guests like Bradford Cox of Deerhunter and Aaron Hemphill of the Liars. It's hard to judge the soundtrack accurately, since I haven't seen the film yet, but forgetting that fact, it's clear from one listen that Karen O. has done the film (and book, for that matter) justice. A twinkling xylophone starts the soundtrack off, and that childlike theme continues throughout the rest of the songs. Half-shouted cries and jangly guitars rule lead single, "All Is Love," turning Karen's enthusiasm into some of the most infectious indie-pop you've heard in a long time. An outro of children shrieking leads into the handclapping of "Capsize," with Karen acting as head cheerleader, spelling out words amidst angular guitars and lush atmospherics. Scaling back on the peppiness, Karen also shows off what got her where she is in the first place: her ability to write the most heart-breaking ballads ever. "Worried Shoes" and "Cliffs" are both evocative and clear standouts that you know will sound amazing wherever they're placed in the film. If you're already excited for this movie (and seriously, what is wrong with you if you're not?), this soundtrack is the perfect companion to whet your appetite even further.

Pequeño homenaje a John Hughes con uno de los soundtracks --¿el soundtrack?-- de mi adolescencia. Ya sé que la película no la dirigió, pero la escribió, la produjo y es, en todo sentido, una película suya.

The Pretty in Pink soundtrack album was released in 1986 for the John Hughes movie Pretty in Pink, a film about teenage love and social cliques in a 1980s American high school.

The title song by the Psychedelic Furs was the actual inspiration for the movie and was re-recorded for this soundtrack. It had been released in 1981 for the album Talk Talk Talk. "Left of Center" was also re-recorded. The first track, "If You Leave", was written in 1985 in advance specifically for the movie. In addition to their song "Shell Shock", New Order also had "Thieves Like Us Instrumental" and "Elegia" appear in the movie but not on the soundtrack. The Rave-Ups, who do appear in the movie, do not have any songs on the soundtrack. Nik Kershaw's "Wouldn't It Be Good" was re-recorded by former Three Dog Night vocalist Danny Hutton's band, Danny Hutton Hitters.

The movie also includes an Otis Redding song, "Try a Little Tenderness", that Duckie lipsyncs to, which is not on the official soundtrack.

"(500) Days of Summer" & "Away We Go" (Original Soundtracks)

Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl Doesn't. The film tells the story of the relationship between a woman, Summer (Zooey Deschanel), who doesn't believe in true love and a man, Tom (Gordon-Levitt), described as a hopeless romantic, who falls in love with her. Over a span of 500 days, the story moves in a non-linear fashion from the perspective of Tom, who goes from ecstatic giddiness one moment, indulging in a fantasy song and dance sequence at one point, to crippling depression the next. The soundtrack features two songs ('Us' and 'Hero') by Regina Spektor, and 'Sweet Disposition' by Melbourne-based band The Temper Trap. Artists include Black Lips, classic tracks from The Smiths, Doves, Feist, Meaghan Smith and many more.

Longtime (and now thirtysomething) couple Burt and Verona are going to have a baby. The pregnancy progresses smoothly, but six months in, the pair is put off and put out by the cavalierly delivered news from Burt’s parents Jerry and Gloria that the eccentric elder Farlanders are moving out of Colorado – thereby eliminating the expectant couple’s main reason for living there. So, where, and among whom of those closest to them, might Burt and Verona best put down roots to raise their impending bundle of joy? The couple embarks on an ambitious itinerary to visit friends and family, and to evaluate cities. The soundtrack features thirteen songs performed by singer-songwriter Alexi Murdoch. Several of the tracks on the Away We Go soundtrack were culled from Alexi Murdoch’s own Time Without Consequence album, along with three previously unreleased Murdoch songs: “Towards The Sun”, “The Ragged Sea”, and “Crinan Wood”. The disc also features a selection of classics by George Harrison, The Stranglers, Bob Dylan, and The Velvet Underground.

The new movie from filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (Broken Flowers, Down by Law, Dead Man) is set in the striking and varied landscapes of contemporary Spain. The location shoot there united the writer/director with acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love, Paranoid Park). Isaach De Bankole stars in the lead role for Mr. Jarmusch; this marks the duo’s fourth collaboration over nearly two decades, following Night on Earth, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, and Coffee and Cigarettes. The film also features several other actors with whom Mr. Jarmusch has previously worked, including Alex Descas, John Hurt, Youki Kudoh, Bill Murray, and Tilda Swinton; and actors new to his films, including Hiam Abbass, Gael García Bernal, Paz De La Huerta, Jean-François Stevenín, and Luis Tosar. The Limits of Control is the story of a mysterious loner (played by Mr. De Bankole), a stranger, whose activities remain meticulously outside the law. He is in the process of completing a job, yet he trusts no one, and his objectives are not initially divulged. His journey, paradoxically both intently focused and dreamlike, takes him not only across Spain but also through his own consciousness.

Doveman - Footloose (2008)

Un día, hace ya muchos años, fui a ver en Nueva York a Freedy Johnston en vivo. Tocaba en un barcito de la Avenida B --en ese entonces, una zona todavía bastante densa-- y no había más de cien personas adentro. El show consistía en tocar, íntegramente, "Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars" con su guitarra. La "puesta" del disco fue una verdadera y grata sorpresa para mí, y tal vez aquel episodio sea el motivo por el cual cada vez que me entero de un proyecto similar le presto atención. Y ese es el caso de este "Footloose".

Es que es toda una curiosidad este disco, integrado por versiones acústicas --e irreconocibles-- de la banda de sonido de la película "Footloose" (1984), cuyos temas interpretaron originalmente artistas tan olvidados como Kenny Loggins, Bonnie Tyler, Deniece Williams, Sammy Hagar o Shalamar. Poco más que voz y teclados integran este disco de Thomas Bartlett, un tecladista que grabó dos álbumes como Doveman y que suele ser músico de sesión de bandas como The National o de Antony & The Johnsons. Hecho en memoria de la hermana de un amigo suyo que murió (debajo pueden leer la historia), se trata de un álbum melancólico y nostálgico, muy diferente en tono al original. No es un gran disco --tampoco el original lo era, más allá de los recuerdos preadolescentes que pueda traer--, pero vale la pena escucharlo.

About the Album

"When I was very young, my half-sister Jenny died tragically. She was a teenager, and it was the 80's. She left behind a wardrobe of brightly colored clothes, rainbow stickers, life-size paintings, doodles on lined paper, and hundreds of tapes. These constitute most of my memories of her. It's sad for me to look at these things, and usually I don't. But a couple of summers ago I found a tape of hers with a startling cover photograph - this was Footloose. I couldn't stop listening: it was a portrait of 80's love, desire, pain, freedom, and frenzy; of being a teenager in a time of change. By listening, I could step into Jenny's shoes, see things from her vantage point. I could be emancipated by rock and roll and walkmen, just as she had been. We could listen together.

I asked my friend Thomas to cover the album, which, sheltered as he is, he had never heard before. I was clear that I wanted to him to cover the whole album - the point wasn't to rework any one song, but to re-imagine the picture they made together. With a new Footloose we could reply to the past, tell our own story about being young. This is what he made."

When listening to this music you should keep in mind artists such as Frederic Chopin, Cat Power, Keith Jarrett, Talk Talk, and Chris Whitley -- unless you don't know any them or are not a fan, in which case you should keep in mind Nick Drake, The National, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, and other, trendier bands whose music has recently appeared in car commercials.
