Scorsese inspires from afar, by Wes Anderson (Variety)

Many years ago, when my second film, "Rushmore," came out, I got a letter from Marty saying how much he liked it -- and "Bottle Rocket" -- and I was so thrilled. Not only was I a disciple, but I'd read "Scorsese on Scorsese" many times and listened to all his commentaries on "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver" on the Criterion Collection, so I felt that I'd been tutored by him without his knowledge.

Around the same time, he also contributed a profile of me to a magazine article about young filmmakers, and when I heard about it, I couldn't believe it. Shortly after, I met him in person when he invited me to a screening of "Bringing Out the Dead," and I was so pleased and excited to finally meet him, but understandably what he had on his mind was his work in progress, and it was fascinating to see him in his process.

Since then, we've kept in touch, even though he's so busy, while I've been working abroad so much. I'll get an invitation to see a movie he's screening, and in fact one of them, Renoir's "The River," really inspired me to make "The Darjeeling Limited." I'd never seen it before, and his Film Foundation had restored it, and that was the catalyst for me to spend the next few years pursuing my Indian project -- it was a direct result of Marty's invitation.

What's amazing about Marty is that he makes all these huge films and is so busy with his Film Foundation and documentary and book projects, and yet he finds time to executive produce so many projects for other filmmakers, such as Alison Anders. He really stays engaged, and I think encouraging new filmmakers is part of his credo.

Sixty-nine films vie for foreign language Golden Globe award

Palme d’Or winner The White Ribbon (pictured), A Prophet,Mother, and City Of Life And Death are among a record 69 foreign-language films that have qualified for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Five nominees will be announced on December 15. The awards will take place on January 17, 2010.

"Slumdog Millionaire", la gran ganadora de los Globos de Oro

Con ocho aciertos en 14 candidaturas veo que estuve bastante flojo en la elección de los Globos de Oro. Si bien haber acertado parte del aluvión "Slumdog Millionaire" y la victoria de "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" me suman puntos a favor, no me conformo con tan pocos aciertos.

Pero es que hubo sorpresas. No me esperaba el doblete Kate Winslet ya que tanto "Revolutionary Road" como "The Reader" son películas que han caído un poco en la apreciación de los analistas de premios --y las dobles nominadas nunca ganan en sus dos candidaturas--, y lo de Mickey Rourke/Sean Penn era un 50/50 que se decidió, seguramente, porque jamás Penn le dio bola a esta ceremonia (ayer no estuvo, de hecho). No pensé que "Slumdog..." arrasaría ganando también guión y música (supuse que en esos rubros abrirían juego hacia las otras películas) y, bueno, qué decir de Colin Farrell... Ni él lo podía creer.

Respecto a la ceremonia en sí ya escribiré más tarde en "Clarín". Aquí sólo quiero analizar brevemente el fenómeno "Slumdog..." Me está empezando a dar la sensación de que la película de Boyle va en camino a ser la gran ganadora de los Oscars y que la única película "estadounidense" que puede detenerla --y a la que los norteamericanos le pondrán todas las fichas-- es "The Dark Knight" (puse "estadounidense" porque si bien es una producción de Hollywood tanto el director como la mayoría de los actores principales --Bale, Caine, Oldman, Ledger-- no lo son).

Tengo la impresión de que el resto de las precandidatas ("Benjamin Button", "Frost/Nixon", "Milk", "Revolutionary Road", "Doubt", "The Reader") no entusiasman demasiado a los votantes, mientras que "Slumdog" --con su oportunismo tercermundista, con su estilo "funky pobreza" a lo "Ciudad de Dios" y su estilo de cuento de hadas para adultos-- tiene todo para, como dicen por ahí, ganarse los corazones de los espectadores. Queda la opción de último momento de un vuelco a "Gran Torino", de Clint Eastwood, que arrancó muy bien en taquilla, que es un favorito de la Academia en los últimos años, y que es norteamericana de pura cepa. Veremos qué pasa.

Con respecto a los ganadores de TV, veo poca televisión como para analizarlos, pero me alegra que dos series que sí veo --una, regularmente, la otra cuando me acuerdo, como son "Mad Men" y "30 Rock"-- hayan triunfado.

Globos de Oro: predicciones

Esta noche es la ceremonia de los Globos de Oro y me da la impresión de que muchas cosas han cambiado desde que se anunciaron. Varios de los títulos que nominaron hoy ya no aparecen en ninguna lista y es difícil --como siempre-- descifrar qué votarán los ignotos (en su mayoría) miembros de la Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Igual, para ir probando suerte en espera de los Oscars, me juego a apostar quienes ganan hoy. Con un 70% de aciertos (10 sobre 14) me doy por satisfecho. En bold (negrita) van mis candidatas. No las que quiero que ganen (no vi todas asi que no podría opinar) sino las que imagino ganarán.

Globos de Oro: precandidatos extranjeros

A diferencia de los Oscar, los premios Globo de Oro --que otorga la impresentable pero por algún curioso motivo útil y famosa Asociación de la Prensa Extranjera de Hollywood (HFPA son sus siglas en inglés)-- no basa sus precandidatas a mejor película extranjera en lo que cada país decide mandar. Ellos eligen en base a criterios propios y, para ser honestos, sus nominados suelen tener más lógica y sentido que los que eligen los votantes de la Academia. Ambos, en realidad, están muy lejos de seleccionar lo mejor del cine del mundo (no imagino lo último de Garrel, Serra, Gomes, Denis, Alonso, etc. entrando en ninguna de las competencias), pero, como dicen por ahí, es lo que hay.

De los 53 títulos preseleccionados por la HFPA para sus premios de 2008, ¡14 son franceses! No voy a discutir la calidad del cine de ese país, pero a primera vista la cifra es excesiva, más si se toma en cuenta que incluye unos cuantos bodriazos. Aquí les dejo la lista completa de precandidatos (de la Argentina sólo está "Leonera", de Pablo Trapero). Tras haber viajado por varios festivales este año y habiendo visto cientos de películas, les aseguro no sólo que faltan unas cuántas (eso es predecible) sino que hay casi 20 que son entre impresentables y desconocidas (fíjense en la preselección mexicana...) Lean, saquen sus propias conclusiones y piensen todas las películas que faltan... y las que sobran.
