Il Divo and Gomorrah top European Film Academy nominations

Il Divo and Matteo Garrone's Gomorrah have picked up five nominations for this year's European Film Academy Awards.

The Italian hits, which both played in competition in Cannes, compete for best film, best director, best screenplay, best actor and best cinematography. Toni Servillo is nominated as best actor for his parts in both films.

Another Cannes competitor Ari Folman's Waltz With Bashir has four mentions as does Juan Antonio Bayona's The Orphanage.

Laurent Cantet will be hopeful of adding an EFA to his Palme d'Or win with nominations for best film and best director for The Class.
UK films also get strong recognition with multiple nominations for Steve McQueen's Hunger, Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky and Joe Wright's Atonement.

Andreas Dresen's Cloud 9 and Eran Riklis' Lemon Tree are both nominated in two categories.

The nominations for the 21st EFAs were announced at the Seville European Film Festival.

The 1,800 EFA Members will now vote for the winners which will be presented during the Awards Ceremony on 6 December in Copenhagen.
