This fall sees the DVD release of Julian Schnabel's documentary film, Lou Reed's Berlin, which captures a performance of the concept album being performed in in its entirety by Reed at Brooklyn's St. Anne's Warehouse. Matador is releasing the soundtrack, which has been given a new title (Berlin: Live at St. Ann's Warehouse) and is now being released just a bit later than originally announced. The first mp3 from the set just went up at Matador's blog, and it's "Caroline Says, Pt. II", one of the best known tunes from the record. VU heads who don't know Reed's career that well maybe remember an earlier version of this track called "Stephanie Says", included on the rarities set VU. Pretty much any time you have Lou Reed writing a song with "says" in the title, you've got something special. His voice sounds a little rough here, but I like that he goes for it anyway, letting the missed notes fall where they may, and he gets an assist on the closing "It's so cold in Alaska" refrain from Antony Hegarty.
