The French Semester - Open Letter to the Disappeared (2008)

The French Semester is a fresh, new music extravaganza raised on indie rock anthems, new wave hand clappers, late mod polyphony, and shoegaze technics. Rarely is a band this diverse in origin: India, Mexico, Vietnam, and Europe. Foreign lads in a foreign land, rock and roll gave them a home in a new world where people, goods, and information moved interchangeably. Based out of Los Angeles, the boys eschewed the sequencers and synthesizers of the city’s post punk revival in favor of purer, song-driven arrangements centering on the sharp wording of singer/guitarist Riaz Tejani. Grounded by the northern soul grooves of drummer Charles Maxey and bassist Gil Disloquez, the songs are then carried skyward into dreampop by backing vocalist Bryan Sullivan—whose sparse keyboard riffs bend against the tunes with chilling simplicity. The band has made a sound all their own unconsciously blending influences like Big Star, the Stone Roses, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Pavement, while adding a Third World sensibility that only immigrant kids would; one modern comparison links them to Vampire Weekend, a band they performed with in their early days. But while comparisons are rough, early buzz from DJ’s and fans worldwide has been decisive (thanks to a European distribution agreement via Beyond Your Mind/Cargo Records).
