Formed by Yale dropout Dave Longstreth in 2002, Dirty Projectors have grown into a unique musical hybrid; taking elements of classical and modern composition, radio-ready R&B production, West African guitar music, and prog-rock and fusing them into something singular, strange, and utterly compelling. On the last DP LP, 2007’s Rise Above, Longstreth “re-imagined” Black Flag’s 1981 punk landmark Damaged, radically recreating the songs to fit his half-dreamt remembrances of it.
Rise Above also found the once ever-changing outfit —whose membership has, over the years, included freak-folk songstress Larkin Grimm, and founding Vampire Weekend members Ezra Koenig and Rostam Batmaglij— settling on a solid four-man lineup. Bassist/vocalist Angel Deradoorian will continue the historical branching-off, though, releasing her debut solo EP, Mind Raft, under the name Deradoorian, on May 5.
This recent flurry of Dirty Projectors activity has also included their collaboration with legendary former Talking Heads frontman, David Byrne, “Knotty Pine,” which kicks off the almighty new Dark Was the Night compilation. Longstreth is also promising a record for his former label, Dead Oceans, before the year is out; making for an impossibly hectic 2009 for Dirty Projectors. altmusic
