St. Vincent - Actor (2009)

The former Polyphonic Spree/Sufjan Stevens noisemaker’s follow-up to 2007’s Marry Me (oh Maeby Fünke!) was co-produced with Clark and John Congleton (Modest Mouse, The Thermals, Polyphonic Spree). The multi-instrumentalist wrote/arranged Actor’s 11 songs and sings, plays guitar, bass, and keys, but took on some additional players like Hideaki Aomori (Sufjan Stevens), Alex Sopp (Björk, Philip Glass), and maximized the rhythm section with Midlake’s McKenzie Smith and Paul Alexander. After throwing in some French horn, violin, and sarongi, Clark’s “Technicolor animatronic ride” description is wholly apt. She was also inspired by Pierrot le Fou, Badlands, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and Disney scores for Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lady and the Tramp.
