Silent Cinema - Fins And Feathers (2009)

Link

Silent Cinema is a New Orleans band. A couple of the members might not be born and bred in this Crescent City, but they’ve earned their cards.

Formed in an attic in 2002, the once insular folk-rock act has now snowballed into a sweeping ensemble with a Southern cornucopia of horns and guitars. Using Micah McKee’s spatial and emotive songs as a canvas, the players in Silent Cinema paint a sonic landscape that moves and grooves. Between Matt Glynn’s driving lead guitar and the washes of powerful horn lines, Cinema owns its stage with an intense yet personal presence.

It is only fitting then, that their second proper release FINS AND FEATHERS reflect the tidal energy of these gentlemen’s craft. On songs like ‘So Say We All’, a pounding pop/rock number with tinges of Afro-beat, Silent Cinema displays a musical freeness that seems a rarity all too often in modern music. Then there’s ‘Trees Came Alive’, a melancholy folk ballad transformed into a vibrant foot-stomping second-line shakedown. Even the title track boasts a curious genre-bending experiment by way of Latin-influenced percussion.

The band’s latest ensemble plays powerful music that comes from a place within a million places. The varying musical influences always translate into a cohesive musical style all to its own. With a new record and the promise of wildly dynamic stage shows to come, the band shows no signs of slowing down. And why should they? They want to keep mixing it up and making music that not only sounds good, but tastes good. After all, Silent Cinema is a New Orleans band.

FINS AND FEATHERS arrives January 2009.
