It seems as though everyone and their mother in Sweden can churn out at least a decent song (true fact: 80% of the population is in a band), but few and far between are those who can make the gems.
The Tough Alliance, Lykke Li, Studio, the Concretes… heck, even the Cardigans deserve the highest of praise. Now, Parker Lewis has officially entered into that upper echelon of Swedish pop craftsmanship.
Lewis popped under our radar late last year with melancholic pop ballads “X-Mas, NYC” and “Dirty Dancing,” both of which he wrote during his stint in New York City. The trip seems to have been both creatively productive and emotionally lonely―ideal circumstances for composing beautiful pop song after pop song. We thought Lewis would all but disappear after being torn from the Big Apple, a city he gradually learned to love, though, and we’d be left with just a handful of lo-fi tunes.
But the young singer/songwriter apparently had bigger plans! He recently released his debut full-length on Mad For It Inc. (a digital label made specifically for Lewis’ first EP, Written and Directed by Parker Lewis), and it’s jaw-droppingly inspiring. The eight jangle-pop songs are dripping with elegant orchestration; arrangements are reminiscent of old doo-wop tunes, lullabies, the guitar work of Johnny Marr, and the twee of the 1980s; the whole thing is as calming as a light, salty sea breeze.
But don’t take our word for it! Grab a sample track below (or stream it in the media player to the right), and download the sucker when you’re thoroughly convinced of its awesome merits. anthemmagazine
