15 docs on Oscar shortlist (Variety)


The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced the 15 docus shortlisted for the documentary feature Oscar. The Academy said 89 films had originally qualified for the selection.

Several titles that have already had successful theatrical runs were on the list, including "The Cove," directed by Louie Psihoyos; "Food, Inc.," directed by Robert Kenner; "Valentino: The Last Emperor," directed by Matt Tyrnauer; and "Every Little Step," directed by James D. Stern and Adam Del Deo.

The year's highest-grossing docu, Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story," which opened Sept. 23, in time for the Academy's Sept. 30 cutoff date, did not make the list. Other high-profile docs absent from the list include "The September Issue," "Tyson," "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," "It Might Get Loud" and "We Live in Public."

Remaining titles on the shortlist are "The Beaches of Agnes," "Burma VJ," "Facing Ali," "Garbage Dreams," "Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders," "The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers," "Mugabe and the White African," "Sergio," "Soundtrack for a Revolution," "Under Our Skin" and "Which Way Home."

Docu branch members will select five nominees from among the 15 titles on the shortlist.

Nominations for the Oscars will be announced Feb. 2; Academy Awards will be presented March 7.
