10 Comedies to Look Forward to In 2010 (Paste)


There are few things I enjoy more than a really good comedy, but there are also few things more disappointing than a bad one. That said, I have high hopes for these 10 movies coming out in 2010. Tracy Morgan also has a couple of films we’re looking forward to, and it looks to be another good year for Zach Galifianakis, one of our favorite stand-up comics of the last decade, who had a break-out performance last year in The Hangover.

1. Cop Out
Director: Kevin Smith
Starring: Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Seann William Scott, Adam Brody, Jason Lee
Release Date: February 26

If I was ever going to watch another Bruce Willis cop movie, it better be directed by Kevin Smith and co-star Tracy Morgan with a top-notch supporting cast.

2. Greenberg
Director: Noah Baumbach
Starring: Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig, Dave Franco, Jennifer Jason Leigh
Release Date: March 12

The master of family dysfunction directs his sixth film, starring Stiller as Roger Greenberg, who moves from New York to L.A. to house-sit for his brother and falls for his brother’s housekeeper.

3. Cemetery Junction
Director: Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Ricky Gervais, Tom Hughes, Christian Cooke, Matthew Goode
Release Date: April 7

A story about three guys working at an insurance company in the ‘70s from writer/directors Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant? It’s the Office prequel!

4. Death at a Funeral
Director: Neil LaBute
Starring: Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan, Martin Lawrence, Loretta Devine, Ron Glass
Release Date: April 16

The director of In the Company of Men and The Wicker Man tackles his first comedy since 2000’s Nurse Betty with the help of Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Tracy Morgan. It’s an American remake of Frank Oz’s 2007 British comedy by the same name.

5. Dinner for Schmucks
Director: Jay Roach
Starring: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams
Release Date: July 23

The man who directed the Austin Powers and Meet the Parents films has Steve Carrell and Zach Galifianakis at his disposal in this remake of French comedy Le Diner des cons.

6. The Other Guys
Director: Anthony McKay
Starring: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson
Release Date:August 6

Anchorman director Adam McKay rejoins Will Ferrell for a cop buddy movie about a police account pairing with a trigger-happy detective.

7. Due Date
Director: Todd Phillips
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jamie Foxx, Zach Galifianakis, Michelle Monaghan, RZA
Release Date: November 5

Todd Phillips’ last comedy, The Hangover, was made with about $35 million and grossed $277 million in the U.S. alone. Here he re-teams with Zach Galifianakis in hopes to recapture the magic. Due Date follows an uptight father-to-be as he hitches a ride home with a slacker in order to be get there in time for his child’s birth.

8. The Extra Man
Starring: Kevin Kline, Paul Dano, Katie Holmes, John C. Reilly, Celia Weston
Director: Robert Pulcini, Shari Springer Berman
Release Date: 2010

The director of American Splendor and The Nanny Diaries wrote and directed this Kevin Kline/Paul Dano film about a failed playwright/escort for rich widows on the Upper East Side and the young man he takes under his wing. It will make its debut at Sundance this year and hope to leave Park City with a U.S. distribution deal.

9. The Kids Are All Right
Director: Lisa Cholodenko
Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Annette Benning, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo Josh Hutcherson
Release Date: 2010

Fresh from her turn as Tim Burton’s Alice, newcomer Mia Wakikowska stars as one of two siblings raised by a lesbian couple, who finally meet their sperm-donor father.

10. Paul
Director: Greg Mottola
Starring: Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig
Release Date: 2010

Paul is an alien voiced by Seth Rogen who’s discovered by a pair of British sci-fi fanatics near Area 51. Co-stars Nick Frost and Simon Pegg wrote the screenplay with Tim Bevan, and Superbad director Greg Mottola is at the helm.
