Jay Reatard, born Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr. of Memphis, died early this morning. The cause of death isn't known as of 4:25 p.m. today, though his former label, Goner Records, is reporting that he died in his sleep.
Reatard has been making music for a long time; in fact, he sent his first tape to Goner when he was just 15. He recently signed to Matador Records, which released Watch Me Fall this summer.
The label released a statement this afternoon, which reads, "We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., a.k.a. Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we've ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We're honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly."
If you've never heard the music of Jay Reatard, I suggest this recent Song of the Day.
