“These days, growing up can be dangerous”, says section director Maryanne Redpath when she looks at this year’s Generation programme. “By no means are all the adventures here of an external nature. Conflicts occur ever more frequently in the mind and are capable of causing just as much trouble there.” 27 features from 25 countries have been selected for Kplus and 14plus, ten of which are world premieres. In addition, 30 short films are vying for Crystal Bears in the two competitions.
The Generation Kplus competition will open in the Zoo Palast on February 6th with Lippels Traum (Lippel’s Dream) by Lars Büchel. Another German feature will also celebrate its world premiere at Kplus: the German-Swedish- production Die Stimme des Adlers (The Eagle Hunter’s Son) by René Bo Hansen transports you away to the Mongolian steppe where an extraordinary coming-of-age story is told to the backdrop of breathtaking panoramas.
Generation 14plus will open with the British film Unmade Beds on February 6th. The audience at the premiere in Babylon Cinema can look forward to an intimate look inside a warehouse squat in London’s East End, where creative artists and other free spirits dwell. Director Alexis Dos Santos (Glue) gets so close to his characters, it’s as if he has a room in this community himself.
The powerful imagery of three animated films span both competitions and all age brackets. Igor Veyshtagin’s Mamma Mu & Kråkan (Mamma Moo & Crow) invites young viewers to follow the zany escapades of a daring cow, who is not satisfied with her pasture. The adventures of an adolescent monk are superbly illustrated in Brendan and the Secret of Kells (Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey). After seven years of concerted effort by European animation companies The Cartoon Saloon and Les Armateurs, Kplus will screen the world premiere of this cinematic kaleidoscope. Adam Elliot (who won an Oscar for his claymation Harvie Krumpet in 2003) draws Melbourne and New York together via airmail in the 14plus competition: pen pals for over twenty years, Mary and Max (spoken by Toni Collette and Phillip Seymour Hoffman) leave no topic untouched.
A documentary film will once again be competing in 14plus for a Crystal Bear. Teenage Response (Eleni Ampelakiotou), a production from Berlin , gives 13 teenagers the space they need to talk intimately about their bodies, their relationships, and their futures – for a total of 156 minutes! “Young people constantly grapple with their lives and the world. The films in Generation invite audiences to share these reflections,” states co-director Florian Weghorn.
